Permanent makeup is a game-changer in the makeup industry. You can get permanent makeup on your skin from your makeup artists. But, with time, you might not like it, or you might not like the fading process. You are not willing to wait until it completely vanishes. Here comes the permanent makeup to rescue. I often wear permanent makeup for long days. So, the question arises here: How to Lighten Permanent makeup?
I wore permanent makeup at a recent music event I noticed it was too much, so I thought to lighten it up. To cope with such a situation, I searched for hacks and DIYs and found many I could do at home.
Luckily, there are ways to remove the pigments, although some may do more damage than good, so do read this to keep everything optimum. I tried different hacks and DIYs to lighten my permanent makeup and concluded I should have written a guide on my techniques for beginners.
How to fade Permanent makeup?
I have used different methods to lighten and fade my permanent makeup, and the essential methods are as follows:
Using Salt
Salt removal is one of the most influential and popular DIY removal permanent makeup methods. It is said that salt will help in the breaking of pigments. These pigments then exist slowly on the skin’s surface after some time.
Salt removal solution acts as a bonding agent to initially draw the ink up to the surface. The scab forms, and once the scabs fall off, the pigment will be lighter or removed.
I have used salt removal on my skin. The grains remove skin cells from the surface, and as they gradually dissolve the solution, the ink comes out of my skin and lightens my permanent makeup. Also, it does not harm or damage my skin.
Tattoo Bleaching and Fading creams
Tattoo bleaching and Fading creams are available online and offline (in markets) that should be used to remove the permanent makeup with regular use. These products contain bleaching ingredients that help in lightening the permanent makeup.
I have used these products at home. I take equal quantities of the bleaching cream and the powder. I religiously apply it to my skin and then rinse my face with fresh water.
These tattoo bleaching and fading creams contain ingredients that might harm or damage (create redness and irritation) your skin. Make sure to consult the doctor and confirm the ingredients before applying them.
Note: Be sure to follow all instructions carefully when removing permanent makeup at home, and if any unusual reactions occur, stop immediately.
Sun Exposure
Sun exposure is the simplest way to lighten the pigments of permanent makeup. Hanging out in the sun (but do not forget to use SPF) helps fade the pigments. I go outside to lighten the pigmentations of my permanent makeup. It is not the quickest way, but it is an option that can be used as a DIY.
Tip: Do not over-expose yourself to the sun while using this method because you do not like to damage the skin in this sun-exposure process.
Skincare Removal
While having permanent makeup on the skin, there are some skincare products that dermatologists are warned to avoid. It is because some skin care products lead to pigment fading. I have tried this process. I used all the skincare which my dermatologist warned me to avoid. This process is slow, but it does not cause any damage to my skin.

Retinol and Acid-based Products
Some ingredients are used to lighten the permanent makeup to fade PMU. These ingredients include retinol, salicylic acid, vitamin c, and glycolic acid, cutting the permanent makeup duration. These ingredients are mainly found in anti-aging and anti-acne products.
Exfoliating Products
Exfoliation is the process that removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin. There are two types of exfoliating; mechanical and chemical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation uses chemicals such as alpha and beta hydroxy acids, which work more or less in the same way but can be more intense.
While on the contrary, Mechanical exfoliation (which can be done at home) is used to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface and lighten the small amount of pigment. I take exfoliating products from the market and use them on my skin to fade my PMU.
The most intense exfoliation methods are done by beauticians: chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Permanent makeup removal through any exfoliation is slow, and the results will fade unevenly and look patchy. Before trying every type of exfoliation, it is essential to consider your skin type.
Tip: If you choose to exfoliate your skin, it is essential to do it safely, so it does not damage your skin.
Laser Removal
Dermatologists do laser removal. Lasers are used to help diminish the pigment on the skin. Laser removal results vary depending on the laser’s strength and wavelength. However, this process can be invasive if it does not perform correctly.
Will permanent makeup fade completely?
Permanent makeup is semi-permanent and will not last a lifetime. With time, permanent makeup will fade completely. Mostly, the permanent makeup starts to fade or disappear in less than six months and takes two to three years. Some factors elongate or shorten the lifespan of permanent makeup.
Sun Exposure plays a significant role in fading the permanent makeup. It causes the color to break down the color and results in fading of the PMU. It is best not to skip sunscreen to ensure that your PMU stays as long as possible.
Strong Exfoliators work to remove the dead and flaky skin layer of the skin. Exfoliators are must-haves in skincare products that you use. The use of solid exfoliants may shorten the life of your permanent makeup.
Tattoo Machine
The tattoo machine is another factor in fading the permanent makeup. Always find a good cosmetician with a good tattoo machine so that your permanent makeup will not fade soon.
How often do you have to touch up permanent makeup?
It is said that even permanent makeup needs a retouch every 2 years. However, if you see any fading or disappearance in your PMU, you can get a little boost after six weeks to your original appointment to renew your permanent makeup.
Is permanent makeup a tattoo?
Permanent makeup is done by injecting needles into the skin, similar to tattoos. But, the needles used for permanent makeup are filled with pigments. Permanent makeup uses black pigments, different shades of brown, and shades of pink for lip blushing. While on the other hand, the needles used for tattoos are filled with ink.
